The Sportsman Team Challenge Nationals was held June 13 – 14, 2014 at Copperhead Creek Shooting Club in Marble Falls, Texas. Things didn’t look good the night before the match started, when 70 MPH winds hit along with like 3 inches of rain. The match hotel called all rooms to tell us we were under tornado warnings and if the alarm went off to immediately come to the lower center of the building for safety. Luckily we didn’t have to. The range itself didn’t fair so well. Tents which had been set up were demolished, outhouses were blown over, and some of the roads had washed badly. Luckily, after postponing the start of the match for about 2 1/2 hours, the sandy soil sucked up much of the water and many of the competitors pitched in and cleaned up the mess and the match got underway.
Turnout for the match was good. There were 24 – 3 man teams and 26 – 2 man teams. Sierra 3 man team consisting of Carroll Pilant, Thomas Rodrigues, and Mark Self managed to win the preliminary round in Sportsman A class, moving us into the Championship round. A gun malfunction on the rifle stage in the Championship round cost us several points that we needed to beat out the winning team of Lost Amigos. In Sportsman A – 2 Man team event , Sierra 2 Man consisting of Carroll Pilant and Thomas Rodriguez managed to beat Nelson Custom Guns 2 Man team by only 10 points.
This was a great match and the Massey family did an excellent job of getting it put together with countless hours of hard work and dedication.
